How to use this guide

A strong data analyst is not the person who knows the most tools. It is the person who can take a vague business question, turn it into something measurable, pull the right data, pressure-test the answer until it is trustworthy, and explain it so a decision-maker acts on it. Everything in this guide serves that loop.

Read it in order the first time, then keep it as a reference. Each chapter follows the same rhythm: the idea in plain language, why it matters on the job, worked examples you can reproduce, and interview-grade practice. The analyst workflow#

The chapters map onto a single motion that repeats on every project. You define the real question, get and clean the data, model and analyze it, then communicate a result someone can act on. The loop is rarely tidy: findings often reshape the original question and send you back a step. That is normal and healthy.

What this guide assumes#

It assumes you are comfortable with basic arithmetic and percentages and willing to practice. It teaches everything else from the ground up: the SQL you will use every day, how data is stored and moved in a modern warehouse, how to clean and govern it responsibly, how to analyze and visualize it, and how to communicate and interview. No prior coding is required, though you will write plenty of SQL by the end.
